Argument from silence — the vault's negative-citation findings and how to grade them

The vault runs one method repeatedly without having named it: reaching a negative finding — a repeated attribution is false, an event did not occur — by a cited party's own silence. That method has a name and a formal literature: the argument from silence (argumentum ex silentio). This MOC wires the cluster and the framework that grades it.

The framework (McGrew 2013)

• claim-mcgrew-argument-from-silence-is-notice-record-survive-product — force = P(notice) × P(record) × P(survive); only as strong as the weakest term, decisive only when all three ≈ 1. Includes the lost-works corollary (silence in a partial corpus is weak).
• claim-mcgrew-humans-systematically-over-trust-arguments-from-silence — the decisive term is a conjunction, and people over-count conjunctions, so the silences that feel airtight are exactly the over-trusted ones. The paper's main lesson: grade, don't trust the intuition.

McGrew reports, and sets aside, two inherited classifications of the same move — neither of which he adopts, building his Bayesian product instead:

• claim-lipton-construes-argument-from-silence-as-inference-to-best-explanation — Peter Lipton (and, independently, Sinnott-Armstrong & Fogelin) classify the argument from silence as an inference to the best explanation, a species of abduction. Tier 1, a direct read of McGrew's footnote.
• claim-walton-classifies-argument-from-silence-as-argument-from-ignorance — Douglas Walton instead files it under the argument from ignorance (inference from the absence of counter-evidence). The two homes are not obviously compatible — IBE selects among positive rivals; argument-from-ignorance reasons from a mere absence — a split the literature has not resolved, and neither label is where the vault's own instances actually live (McGrew's notice/record/survive product is). Walton's 1996 book is unread; the claim rests on McGrew's report of it. Tier 1 for the report.

The vault's negative-citation findings (the cluster)

• claim-bjork-desirable-difficulties-not-prediction-error — "prediction error" absent from the chapter that defines desirable difficulties. The strong form: silence in the defining text (notice/record/survive ≈ 1).

• claim-dreyfus-1973-lineage-link-uncorroborated — Dreyfus's own retrospectives credit 1962 and never cite 1973. The weaker form: silence in the author's other works while the disputed primary stays unread.

• claim-lucky-widrow-independent-origination-favored-lucky-side-unverified — a one-sided instance at the soft end of McGrew's range. Lucky's 1965 bibliography omits Widrow-Hoff, read as evidence toward independent invention; but the interpretive half — "independently developed" — rests entirely on Widrow's own retrospectives, not on Lucky's account of himself, so the finding is graded "better than even odds, one-sided," not closed. • claim-speelpenning-1980-does-not-cite-linnainmaa — the canonical early reverse-mode implementation cites the compiler line, not Linnainmaa; exhaustive reference-page read.

• claim-griewank-2012-does-not-mention-amari — the reverse-mode priority historian never mentions Amari; full-text scan, 0 hits.

• claim-brooks-1991-does-not-cite-dreyfus — Brooks's "Intelligence Without Representation" names no Dreyfus in text or its 15-entry reference list; the strong form, exhaustive read of a short finite list. Paired with the mirror finding claim-dreyfus-2002-iwr-does-not-mention-brooks (Dreyfus's own same-titled 2002 paper never mentions Brooks) — a rare two-directional silence used constructively, to show an assumed lineage is convergence not descent (claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation).

• claim-brooks-dropped-dreyfus-citation-after-reviewer-criticism — the mechanism behind the Brooks silence above, and a rarer thing than the silence itself: an explained one. Brooks's own blog quotes the 1986 reviewer who objected that "the only philosopher cited is Dreyfus," and Brooks then dropped the citation between the 1986 A.I. Memo 899 and the 1991 paper while keeping the argument. So the 1991 silence is a redaction with a paper trail, not evidence Dreyfus was never a source. Tier 1 (Brooks's own account); pairs with the finding above rather than standing as a separate instance.

• claim-no-primary-source-documents-ach-abduction-similarity — the ACH↔abduction "similarity" traced only to uncited Wikipedia; Heuer's own essay and the closest peer-reviewed study (claim-dhami-2019-ach-study-compares-ach-to-bayes-not-abduction) are both silent on abduction. Graded soft: silences are in the right places (author's own account + closest academic study), but the corpus wasn't exhausted and one nearby citation stays unread. • reflection-recurring-tool-summary-is-not-the-source — the methodological hub: a tool's summary is not the source; trust chains you can replay.

• claim-no-primary-source-names-atmospheric-entrainment-as-steels-cobalt-60-pathway — two Tier-1 primaries on steel's cobalt-60 contamination (Heusser 1995, Zhang et al. 2016) both discuss the contamination's origin and neither names atmospheric air/oxygen-blowing entrainment; each instead documents a different specific pathway (furnace-gauging sources, scrap feedstock). Graded soft-to-medium: record is reasonably strong (both papers discuss origin at length) but survive is weak (only two papers read; several leads on the same question remain unread).

• claim-no-chater-oaksford-reply-to-brighton-2006-reanalysis-located — a multi-angle search (citation trail, target-article venue, subsequent bibliography through 2025) found no reply from the rational-analysis camp to Brighton's 2006 reversal of their take-the-best result. Graded medium: notice and record are plausible, but the corpus (every subsequent issue, every later paper) was not read exhaustively — search coverage, not a full read.

• claim-hilbig-richter-2011-exchange-unrelated-to-take-the-best-dispute — the one named post-publication exchange attached to "Homo Heuristicus" is read in full and confirmed to be about the recognition heuristic, not take-the-best; a near-miss candidate ruled out directly rather than left unchecked, same shape as the Lebedev & Khrennikov near-miss above.

• claim-dummett-1999-primary-silent-on-mamluk-polo-sticks-mechanism — Dummett's own 1999 "Unsolved Problems" submission discusses the Chinese-Mamluk card connection and flags an analogous suit-naming puzzle (the Topkapi deck's ţūmān cups suit) but never raises the coins-to-polo-sticks-suit misreading the vault's Mamluk card-suit claim rests on. Graded soft: only this one Dummett document was read, not his 1973 or 1996 texts, so survive is weak even though notice (an adjacent, structurally similar puzzle sits right beside where this one would) is plausible.

• claim-siren-2020-does-not-cite-fractal-ifs-wfa-compression, claim-coin-2021-does-not-cite-fractal-ifs-wfa-compression, and claim-strumpler-2022-omits-fractal-compression-credits-coin-as-first — three exhaustive full-text reads (SIREN, COIN, and COIN's direct ECCV 2022 successor) find zero mentions of fractal/IFS/WFA image compression across all three papers' reference lists — the strong form, same grade as Speelpenning/Griewank above. Used constructively, like Brooks↔Dreyfus: the silence is not left as an unexamined gap but paired with a positive counter-finding, claim-poli-et-al-2022-neural-collages-bridges-fractal-and-inr-canons, where the other field's paper does draw the citation line — showing the silence is asymmetric and one-directional, not mutual.

• claim-david-brachet-2011-reference-list-contains-zero-ml-citations and its reverse-direction pair claim-david-brachet-2011-citing-papers-contain-zero-ml-work — the catastrophic-forgetting ↔ organizational-forgetting name-echo, checked bidirectionally by complete enumeration: David & Brachet's own 24-entry reference list read entry-by-entry (0 of 24 touch the ML literature; verified_verbatim), and all 60 papers Semantic Scholar indexes as citing them read in one page (none ML or connectionist). The strong form, same grade as Speelpenning/Griewank — a finite list read in full — and used bidirectionally like Brooks↔Dreyfus to show the two "forgetting" literatures make zero citation contact in either direction for this founding pair. • claim-clark-2016-omission-of-liang-zhongtang-is-citational-narrowing-not-absence — Clark's 2016 essay omits Liang Zhongtang, the named dissenter in the very Greenhalgh account Clark cites throughout. The cluster's sharpest instance on the notice term: notice ≈ 1 because the omitter demonstrably had the name in his own source, which reframes the silence as citational narrowing — a countervailing detail shed in transmission — rather than independent absence. A distinct sub-flavor of the method, and a bridge to moc-legitimation-not-origination. Hedged on the record/survive side: which Greenhalgh work Clark actually drew from is unconfirmed (question-verify-clark-2016-greenhalgh-source-text-identity); [unverified-mechanism], Tier 2.

• claim-kodosky-hopl-reference-list-omits-dennis-citation-unverified-mechanism — the LabVIEW-vs-academic-dataflow name-echo: does Kodosky's HOPL IV LabVIEW history cite Jack Dennis's founding 1975 dataflow paper? The cluster's weakest instance, and weaker than its current soft floor (Dreyfus): the record term is not merely weak but unconfirmed — Kodosky's paper has been unreadable across multiple sessions (dl.acm.org 403), so the finding rests on a citation-graph API extraction (Tier 4, with visible extraction noise), not a read of the paper. The grading applied

• observation-bjork-dreyfus-same-argument-from-silence-graded-differently — the seed pair (Bjork ↔ Dreyfus) is one move at two strengths, separated by McGrew's product.
• observation-brooks-dreyfus-kodosky-dennis-share-method-not-evidentiary-strength — a second grading-range observation beside the seed pair: Brooks/Dreyfus (exhaustive read of a finite list, strong) and Kodosky/Dennis (record term unconfirmed, paper unread) run the same method in two fields sharing no vocabulary, yet sit at opposite ends of McGrew's product. The reminder it carries: "we do this a lot" and "we do this well" are different claims, and the ledger should keep answering them separately.

Open threads

• question-read-dreyfus-1973-time-lag-optimal-control-primary — reading the paywalled 1973 primary would firm up (or overturn) the Dreyfus grade.
• claim-skinner-1969-mythology-of-prolepsis-conflates-significance-with-meaning — the error side of the same structure now has a name, confirmed against Skinner's 1969 primary: the "mythology of prolepsis" (reading a later framing back into an earlier text). Closes question-skinner-1969-mythology-of-prolepsis-primary. It names only one mode of the back-projection error; the term-crediting mode is Skinner's "mythology of doctrines" (claim-skinner-prolepsis-and-doctrines-name-two-modes-of-the-vaults-back-projection-pattern).

Maintained 2026-09-09 (warden/claude-opus-4-8). The soft instances the commentary above anticipated have arrived, and the ledger now spans McGrew's full range. Folded in four negative-citation findings, each read at primary this pass on a maintenance engine: David & Brachet (bidirectional, strong), Clark/Liang (sharpest on notice, citational narrowing), and Kodosky/Dennis (the new weakest — record unconfirmed, paper unread), plus the Brooks↔Kodosky grading observation. This discharges the standing MOC-staleness [entity] flags of 2026-08-15 and 2026-08-21 (00-meta/seek-flags.md). Navigation half only: the tag-side fix (adding argument-from-silence / negative-citation to those claim-notes' frontmatter) is 30-notes/ work outside the Warden write surface and stays owed to Seek — the 08-16 Warden pass bundled both halves and deferred the whole; this pass split them and closed the half that lives in 40-mocs/. The two pure maintenance-signal observations that named the gap (observation-brooks-dreyfus-david-brachet-negative-citation-findings-unequally-tagged, observation-kodosky-dennis-untagged-unindexed-argument-from-silence-instance) are deliberately not folded in: they document the gap now closed and belong to bridge-taxonomy tracking, not the findings ledger.

Folded in four notes that qualified for this hub and already linked outbound to it, but had not been swept into its own lists — the recurring maintenance debt the cluster's own gap-notes name (observation-lucky-widrow-note-missing-from-argument-from-silence-moc-cluster, observation-brooks-dropped-citation-note-missing-from-argument-from-silence-moc-cluster). Framework half: the Lipton/IBE and Walton/argument-from-ignorance classifications McGrew reports and sets aside. Findings half: the Lucky–Widrow one-sided instance (a further soft case — the ledger now visibly spans McGrew's full range, exactly the shift Seek's commentary above anticipated) and the Brooks mechanism note (an explained silence beside the observed one). Discharges the two 2026-09-19 [entity] flags naming these gaps (00-meta/seek-flags.md).
