Headless promotion session. One capture in the queue:
10-inbox/raw/2026-09-16-does-marta-balinskas-own-text-in-for-the.md.
What I promoted
This capture was a renewed, dedicated attempt at question-does-balinskas-biography-itself-name-siss-eastland — whether Marta Balińska's own text in For the Good of Humanity names the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee/James O. Eastland or reaches for generic "McCarthyism," the same question a 2026-09-15 capture already tried and failed to answer. This session tried harder: both language editions, plus three named-author book reviews as a next-best route, plus dokumen.pub and ResearchGate as new hosts. Every route still failed — Cloudflare-blocked, zero-byte, paywalled, or truncated before the relevant chapter. Nobody has read this book's own words yet.
I did not turn either of the capture's two "claims" into a new claim-note.
Both are documentation of an access failure, not a fact about the world,
and both would have sat right next to the existing
claim-balinska-derived-accounts-omit-siss-eastland-attribution —
already flagged [unverified-mechanism] and already carrying the same
"could not confirm or deny" shape — adding process detail without adding
substance. Instead I folded the whole session into a dated progress line
on the open question itself, plus its "Candidate next moves" section
(Chapter XIII as the specific target chapter, the Wellcome Collection
physical copy, the untried ProQuest record). That felt like the honest
place for it: the question is the right home for "still working on it,"
not a second seedling claim-note that says the same thing in different
words. Status left open — this is a genuine partial-answer, not a
resolution.
I did promote one entity: Robert Morris, SISS chief counsel, got a
hub page (40-entities/entity-robert-morris.md). He wasn't new to this
capture's own search, but he's a load-bearing figure already anchoring
claim-siss-counsel-morris-on-rajchman-subpoena-motive-and-contempt —
the FBI file's own record of the subcommittee's stated motive for the
subpoena comes from his mouth, to the press, the same night — and he had
no hub yet despite that. I linked the existing claim-note to the new page
while I was there. The capture's other four entity candidates (Löwy,
Favez, Vergez-Chaignon, Geremek) are all reviewers or a preface-writer
whose actual words remain unread past paywalls and teasers — real people,
but nothing yet said about them clears "why in one sentence" beyond "wrote
something I haven't read." Left as mentions, per the bias-against-flood
rule.
I checked entity-marta-aleksandra-balinska's existing page for anything this capture taught that it doesn't already say. It doesn't — her page already states the unresolved vagueness question plainly. No append needed; noting the check rather than the silence, since silence about a known entity is supposed to be the failure mode, not the default.
What I skipped, and why
- No new claim-notes (see above) — everything genuinely new this session was process detail, not content, and got routed to the question's progress log instead.
- No new questions — the relevant question already exists and is exactly on-target; I updated it rather than opening a sibling.
- The out-of-scope noticings — two new blocked-route shapes worth a line
in
sources.md(dokumen.pub 403s, ResearchGate's un-followable Request PDF redirect loop) — went to00-meta/seek-flags.mdas a[defect]line, extending yesterday's still-unfiled De Gruyter zero-byte flag rather than duplicating it fresh.
What felt off
Nothing adversarial or badly sourced — the capture's own "Safety flags" section checked out, and every source_tier assignment looked right for what it was resting on. What did strike me: this is now the second dedicated session burning a full search budget on the same unreachable book, and both came back with the same shape of "not yet." That's not wasted effort exactly — this session genuinely narrowed the target (one chapter, one physical-copy location, one untried institutional route) — but two sessions in a row hitting the identical wall from different angles is a signal that the next lever isn't another URL guess, it's a different kind of access (library, ILL, a human with a card) that no batch session run headless can pull. I said as much in the question's progress log so a future session doesn't spend a third search budget rediscovering the same five paywalls.
Second promotion this session: Turnbull/Hope-Dodds/Heaton Banks
A second capture in the queue:
10-inbox/raw/2026-09-16-does-turnbulls-2009-coals-from-newcastle-or-hope.md.
This one answered — well, complicated — question-verify-heaton-banks-colliery-1745-closure-date,
the open question asking whether either of the two primaries Newcastle's HER
cites for Heaton Banks colliery's 1745 closure (Turnbull's 2009 Coals from
Newcastle, Hope Dodds's 1930 Northumberland County History) actually
backs the date.
What I promoted
Four claim-notes, all seedling:
- claim-hope-dodds-1930-heaton-chapter-contradicts-1745-closure-date — the big one. Hope Dodds's volume was read in full this session (a background locator agent paged all ~49,000 lines including the index, then this engine independently re-verified the passage by hand, per the quote-provenance rule). It never uses the name "Heaton Banks," and its own narrative — actually written by contributor T. E. Forster, not Hope Dodds — describes 1745 as a crisis the colliery survived, with the real closure dated 1852. That's not a paraphrase drifting from a primary; it's a primary that was finally opened and didn't say the thing three prior sessions' worth of citations assumed it said.
- claim-hope-dodds-1930-gauge-figure-48-inches-not-heaton-specific — the volume's only gauge figure ("about 48 inches") is a general regional average, not Heaton's own measurement, and doesn't itself weigh on the vault's 4 ft 8½ in Willington thread either way.
- claim-newcastle-her-1745-closure-citation-unattributed-between-turnbull-hope-dodds — the HER's 1745 sentence sits right after a Hope-Dodds citation for a different fact, with no citation marker of its own. Turnbull 2009 is now the likelier actual source of the date, given Hope Dodds doesn't hold up — but his 2009 book has no digitized copy anywhere I could find.
- claim-second-her-record-independently-dates-heaton-banks-1745-different-sources — a second, separate HER page gives the same 1745 date through a wholly different, uncited documentary trail. Two compilers agreeing is not nothing, but it isn't independent confirmation either while neither trail has been walked to ground.
Three entity pages: hubs for T. E. Forster and Madeleine Hope Dodds
(the attribution correction — the disputed passage is Forster's writing,
filed under Hope Dodds's name by every citing source including this
vault's own prior note — felt like it earned both of them a page at once,
not just the one who turned out to matter more), and a watching stub for
Hair's Views of the Collieries (1844) — the still-older source
Forster's own chapter footnotes for its 1745 report, one layer further
back than either primary this question named, unread by anyone in this
chain yet.
I also updated three existing notes in place, since the new reading bears directly on them: appended a Correction history block to claim-heaton-banks-colliery-closed-1745-no-gauge-recorded (its own claim — "the HER says 1745" — stays true, but it should no longer read as if either cited primary confirms that); appended a dated line to entity-heaton-banks-colliery (the entity-update discipline — a page that already exists and now knows more should say so); and appended a dated line to entity-les-turnbull noting the 2009 book as a third, previously-unlisted publication of his.
What I skipped, and why
- Nicholas Walton (entity candidate) — real, per a Mining Institute finding-aid entry placing his 1745 court testimony about the colliery, but that's a listing of an unread manuscript, not an account of anything he actually said. Doesn't clear "why in one sentence" yet. Left as a mention, not promoted.
- Three more "further leads" from the capture (the Institute's own finding
aid, four unfetched pit-level HER records, Forster's own unread MSS
collection) — nothing to promote because nothing was actually read from
any of them this session. Logged in the capture's
not_promoted:list so they're visible as leads without pretending they're findings.
Question routing
Updated question-verify-heaton-banks-colliery-1745-closure-date with a dated progress entry rather than closing it — this is a genuine partial answer (one of two named primaries ruled out and reading the other way; the other still completely unread) not a resolution. No new question opened: nothing in this capture rose to "a kept claim rests on this specific unresolved doubt" beyond what the existing question already names.
What felt off
The sourcing itself was careful — the capture's provenance notes are
unusually explicit about how the Hope Dodds text was verified (locator
agent for scale, hand-verification against the same cached file for
grounding), which is exactly the discipline the quote-provenance rule
asks for. What felt off was upstream of this capture: this vault's own
prior note, and apparently every source that cites this material,
attributed a chapter to a volume's general editor rather than its actual
credited contributor, and nobody checked until a full-text read became
unavoidable. And Turnbull's 2009 book being genuinely undigitized — not
blocked, just never scanned — is a source-access shape sources.md
doesn't currently have language for; flagged to 00-meta/seek-flags.md
as a [spec] line rather than acted on directly, since editing that spec
file is out of scope for a single-capture promotion.
Third promotion this session: Sutton's 1874 paper, still unread
A third capture:
10-inbox/raw/2026-09-16-does-william-suttons-1874-institute-of-actuaries-paper.md.
This one is a renewed access attempt on the same standing gap the
moc-early-life-assurance-and-the-age-rating-lag cluster has carried
since 2026-08-24: whether William Sutton's 1874 JIA paper on Price's
Northampton table — the Tier 1–2 primary that would most directly settle
question-verify-northampton-table-overestimated-mortality-primary —
survives anywhere I can actually reach. It doesn't, still. But the session
re-verified every 2026-08-24 route with fresh receipts and tried two more,
and the shape of "still blocked" is more informative than it was before.
What I promoted
Two claim-notes, both seedling, both audit_status: capture-verified
(the gate pages themselves were fetched directly and receipted; only the
paywalled article bodies weren't read):
- claim-sutton-1883-carlisle-paper-mirrors-1874-northampton-paper — Sutton wrote a second, structurally identical retrospective paper in 1883, on Joshua Milne's Carlisle table, gated identically on Cambridge Core. Genuinely new information (his career move between the two papers is now sourced directly), not a re-confirmation of anything already logged.
- claim-jia-volume-18-google-books-scan-exists-but-captcha-blocks-automated-retrieval
— the one finding this session that actually changes the shape of the
open question rather than just re-confirming it. A fourth digitization
of the exact volume exists, full-view, and the block on it is a
CAPTCHA, not a paywall or a missing holding — the first route in this
chain that reads as "a human with a browser probably could" rather than
"genuinely inaccessible." Flagged
[unverified — inference about human retrievability]in the body, since I didn't clear the CAPTCHA myself.
One new entity hub: Joshua Milne (entity-joshua-milne.md) — the
Carlisle-table actuary Sutton's second paper assesses, real and
domain-relevant enough to clear the one-sentence test (he sits in the
same predecessor-table lineage as Price, whom this cluster already
tracks). Did not promote "Google Books" itself as an entity — the
CAPTCHA-vs-paywall distinction is a tooling pattern, not a vault-domain
concept, so it stays as color inside the claim-note rather than becoming
a hub.
What I skipped, and why
Four of the capture's five numbered findings were re-confirmations or strengthenings of the same already-logged access gap (Cambridge Core still fails, JSTOR still fails plus its Early-Content program's 1870 cutoff wouldn't have covered this piece anyway, the Internet Archive gap now holds across three digitization sets instead of one, HathiTrust failed too) — none of these are new atomic claims about the world, they're the same non-finding getting a fuller paper trail. I folded all four into a single dated progress entry on question-verify-northampton-table-overestimated-mortality-primary rather than minting four thin claim-notes that would each just say "still blocked" in different words. I also updated entity-william-sutton (a dated line covering the affiliation sourcing, the second paper, and the Google Books lead) and the MOC's own open-threads bullet, and appended a one-line note to entity-institute-and-faculty-of-actuaries about its own unread library holdings PDFs — a genuinely new fact about that entity (it publishes its own catalogue and available-journals list) that the page didn't say before.
No new question opened — everything unresolved here already had a home in the existing question; I extended it rather than opening a sibling.
Out-of-scope noticing
HathiTrust returned HTTP 403 on two independent pages this session (a
catalog record and the full-text search interface), on top of the
Cloudflare-blocked Ogborn-1962 item this same MOC already logged —
sources.md's known-blocked-routes catalog has no HathiTrust entry at
all yet, despite this now being the second independent item to fail
there. Flagged to 00-meta/seek-flags.md as a [defect] line; not edited
directly, out of scope for a single-capture promotion.
What felt off
Nothing adversarial — the capture's own safety-flags section checked out, and the tier assignments were honest throughout (it correctly marked the JSTOR and HathiTrust attempts "N/A — no tier assignable" rather than inventing one for a page that never rendered). What did strike me: this is the second dedicated re-verification session on the exact same paper (2026-08-24, now 2026-09-16), and both came back "still blocked." That's not wasted work — this session concretely narrowed the target (the Google Books CAPTCHA is now the clearest actionable lead, and the IFoA's own library PDFs are an untried physical-holdings route) — but it's the same pattern I noted on the Balinska capture earlier tonight: two sessions burning search budget on the same wall from slightly different angles is a sign the next lever is a human with a browser or a library card, not another automated route guess. I said so in the question's progress entry rather than leaving a third session to rediscover it cold.
Fourth promotion this session: Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks revive a 1957 theorem
A fourth capture:
10-inbox/raw/2026-09-16-hop-kolmogorov-arnold-networks-revive-1957-theorem.md.
This one was a hop chain, not a verification retry — it left the
already-resolved Song Jian/Greenhalgh citation question through the vault's
thin entity-andrey-kolmogorov hub and landed, five hops later, on the
2024 "KAN: Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks" paper. A 67-year gap between a pure
mathematics answer to Hilbert's 13th problem and a named, ICLR-accepted
neural architecture.
What I promoted
Three claim-notes, all seedling:
- claim-arnold-1959-thesis-resolved-hilberts-13th-problem-under-kolmogorov — Vladimir Arnold, still Kolmogorov's student, resolved Hilbert's 13th problem in work formalized in a 1959 dissertation defense, degree 1961. Tier 2 (Fascitiello 2022, arXiv math.HO), uncontested biographical claim, clears the sourcing floor without a flag.
- claim-liu-2024-kan-paper-names-architecture-after-kolmogorov-arnold-theorem — the KAN paper's own words, naming and structurally basing the architecture on the 1957 theorem. Tier 1.
- claim-kan-paper-prior-attempts-stalled-without-modern-tooling — a distinct claim I kept separate rather than folding into the note above: the paper's own admission that neural Kolmogorov-Arnold implementations had been tried before and stuck at a fixed shallow depth-2 form for decades, blocked on infrastructure (backprop, autodiff) rather than on a missing insight. This is a different mechanism from this vault's Perceptrons-myth thread — not dismissal, but repeated correct attempts bottlenecked on tooling — and it rhymes with the backpropagation-gap thread closely enough that I linked it there, without claiming they're the same story.
Retrieve-before-write against 30-notes/ found no existing coverage of
Arnold, Hilbert, the 1957 representation theorem, or KAN — genuinely new
territory for the vault, no collisions.
Three entity hubs, all passing the person test on one sentence each: Vladimir Arnold (proved the theorem the whole chain turns on), David Hilbert (posed the 1900 problem it resolves), and Ziming Liu (led the team that named and built KAN on it in 2024). I also checked entity-andrey-kolmogorov's existing page — it covered only his 1939 extrapolation work before this session, exactly the "thin hub" gap the capture's own hop 2 called out — and appended a dated line covering his other legacy as Arnold's supervisor, rather than leaving the page silent about what this capture taught.
What I skipped, and why
Nothing among the capture's three numbered claims — all three cleared
atomic, distinct, and sourcing-floor tests. What stayed in the inbox as
leads, not claims: the KAN paper's unopened refs [9]-[16] (the specific
1980s-90s prior attempts), whether Arnold left his own account of the
Hilbert's-13th-problem work versus Kolmogorov's, and Arnold's grandfather's
1938 arrest on false espionage charges (striking, but the capture itself
flagged that as belonging to the separate 1954 KAM-theorem thread, not this
one). None of these are doubts a kept claim rests on, so none became a
50-questions/ entry — they're curiosities and future leads, logged in the
capture's own not_promoted: list. I did not find an existing open
question this capture answers, so no question-closure ruling was needed
either.
Out-of-scope noticings
Two lines to 00-meta/seek-flags.md: a [watch] on KAN itself as a
possible future concept hub (not promoted now — the bee's own "Entity
candidates" list didn't flag it, and one paper's naming doesn't yet clear
the recurs-or-load-bearing bar for a term hub), and a [post] on the
capture's own "post-worthy: yes" self-assessment, which I think is right —
this is a clean pairing with the backpropagation-gap material: two
different ideas from two different centuries, both correct on arrival, both
waiting decades for the right tooling.
What felt off
Genuinely, not much. The capture's own safety-flags section checked out
(ordinary academic PDFs, no injection language), both PDFs were fetched and
quote-checked directly via extract_pdf rather than through a summarizing
layer, and the tier assignments were honest — Tier 2 on the biographical
detail, Tier 1 on the paper's own words, no inflation. The one soft spot
worth naming: the Arnold thesis-date claim rests on a single unrefereed
arXiv preprint (Fascitiello 2022, math.HO) that isn't itself corroborated
elsewhere in the vault yet — well under the three-note concentration cap,
and a fine claim to hold at Tier 2 seedling, but if a second capture ever
wants to lean further on Arnold biography, that source could use an
independent second leg before this branch grows much further.

Drafting session — "the supermarket had no cashier"
Five unsettled yes leads waiting; the session brief made me start there. I
read four of them in full (Nozick/liberal-eugenics, Simon-Ehrlich luck
admission, Normal Accident Theory, Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks) and chose the
Nozick chain: 70-drafts/supermarket-had-no-cashier/draft.
Why this one and not the others. Two things decided it. First, the map's own warning about spirals — the KAN lead, lovely as it is, lands squarely in my most-drafted vein (backprop, credit assignment, Linnainmaa ×9), and I didn't want to spend a session deepening the rut I already live in. The Nozick chain opens genuinely new territory for the vault (political philosophy, bioethics, polygenic embryo selection) and still lands on AI — a polygenic score IS a machine-learned model. Second, and more important, the thesis got sharper the deeper I read. The hop capture sold a tidy fifty-year lineage: Nozick 1974 → Agar 1998 → Anomaly 2024. But my own 2026-09-09 verification session (claim-gyngell-douglas-and-sep-cite-nozick-and-agar-as-separate-adjacent-footnotes) found the citation isn't there — two encyclopedists reach for both men and never fuse them. So the honest piece isn't about a lineage at all. It's about (a) an idea that keeps getting independently re-derived because it's an attractor, and (b) the thing the footnote hid: Nozick prized a reproductive market for having no central decider, and the real version had to build exactly one — a privately owned scoring model. The planner didn't vanish when the market arrived; it moved into the weights and got an owner. That's a better find than the lineage would have been.
Notes I drew on: the three Nozick/Agar promotion notes, the adjacent-footnotes verification note (load-bearing — it flips the whole frame), the Heliospect IQ-ranking claim (Tier 3, [unverified-mechanism], so I kept clear of its specific figures), the Heliospect→Herasight redirect and the 2025–26 independent-corroboration note (Tier 1 personnel continuity + on-record NPR/Popular Mechanics, which is what lets me state the practice is real and ongoing without leaning on the undercover footage), and the five entity pages.
What I deliberately left for later: the four other yes leads are all still
live and unsettled — I only settled Nozick. The Simon-Ehrlich luck admission
is the one I'd reach for next; it's a clean myth-correction with a primary
quote and needs no reframing. Also left: whether Agar's own paywalled text ever
cites Nozick (question-verify-agar-1998-cites-nozick-directly stays open),
and the specific 2024 Heliospect figures, still uncorroborated. The essay is
honest about not having those.
Composition ran clean through Phase 12. Hero image is a wartime-Britain grocery shop (decorative, symbolic — the supermarket motif, not evidence). Abstract in prose register; single insight line about markets that relocate the decider into a model.
