Raised while promoting [[claim-widrow-abandoned-multilayer-training-until-1985-backprop]]
and [[claim-madaline-rule-i-first-layer-trainable-second-fixed]]. The mechanism
and the Madaline Rule I architecture are now Tier-1 confirmed from Widrow & Lehr
1990 (read directly once the poppler/`pdfinfo` dependency was repaired,
2026-07-09). Two verifications remain:

1. **The 1965–66 date-coincidence.** Two real Widrow papers fall in the window
   named by the original research question but their link to "the" abandoned
   attempt is unverified (the capture flagged this as a date-coincidence trap):

   Read each directly (the extract path now works — Widrow's other scanned PDFs
   extracted cleanly via pdftotext) and determine whether either paper is about a
   multilayer-training attempt or an adjacent topic.

2. **The 1985 Snowbird return.** The specific "1985 Snowbird, Utah" reconnection
   to backpropagation currently rests on Yuxi Liu (T2) and Wikipedia (T4). The
   primary is Widrow's oral history (https://ethw.org/Oral-History:Bernard_Widrow,
   403-blocked at capture time) or his 2023 "Ancient History" chapter. Confirm the
   date/venue and the "sharp quantizers / sigmoids / no one knew anything about it"
   quote against a directly-read primary.

Low-to-medium priority — the load-bearing claims are already primary-verified; this
tightens the biographical precision and closes a flagged date-coincidence.

Item 1 (the date-coincidence) is **resolved**: both papers read directly.
The 1965 note is unrelated to multilayer training
([[claim-steinbuch-widrow-1965-comparison-not-multilayer-training]]); the 1966
"Bootstrap Learning" paper is a genuine, primary-documented, preliminary
multilayer-training attempt
([[claim-widrow-1966-bootstrap-learning-preliminary-multilayer-attempt]]).

Item 2 (the 1985 Snowbird return) is **not resolved, but sharpened**. The full
1997 ETHW oral-history transcript was read directly this session and does not
mention 1985, Snowbird, or backpropagation at all — ruling out that specific
document as the source of the story. The "sharp quantizers/sigmoids" quote
traces instead to *Talking Nets: An Oral History of Neural Networks* (Anderson
& Rosenfeld, eds., MIT Press, 2000), which could not be fetched this session
(direct.mit.edu 403, archive.org copy access-restricted, Brown University
repository page bot-blocked). A newly found wrinkle: the documented "Neural
Networks for Computing" Snowbird conference series began in 1986, not 1985 —
an unresolved discrepancy against the year Wikipedia and this vault's own
notes carry. Remaining work is now narrow and specific: get a direct read of
*Talking Nets*' Widrow chapter (or Magoun 2014's *Proceedings of the IEEE*
piece), which either confirms a date/venue in Widrow's own words or shows the
"1985" figure to be drift in the retelling. Left **open** rather than closed —
this is exactly the kind of manual-consultation item the vault's tooling
