The vault's longest-running unread primary — [[entity-liang-zhongtang|Liang
Zhongtang]]'s 2014 book *中国计划生育政策史论* (China Development Press,
501pp., not digitized) — is still unread by any session, and the 2026-08-16
gap flagged in `90-feedback/2026-08-16-from-auditor-liang-2014-gap-has-no-open-question.md`
and [[moc-legitimation-not-origination]]'s "Open threads" section had no
open question covering it. Two 2026-09-19 claim-notes now triangulate its
likely content from secondary angles rather than closing that gap directly:

  Liang's already-read 2009 essay near-verbatim.

book's content weighting from a library abstract and from two secondhand
readers, not from the book's own pages. If correct, the inference reframes
the cluster's standing assumption (see [[moc-legitimation-not-origination]]'s
"Open threads") that "the book will finally give us Liang's fullest word on
Song Jian" — the fuller word may already be sitting in the vault, in the
2009 essay, and the book's real content may be a different fight (Mao-era
population politics and Ma Yinchu's rehabilitation) that happens to include
a chapter overlapping the 2009 essay. That reframing is itself
load-bearing for how much further research this cluster should spend
chasing the physical book.

## What would answer it

- A direct read of the book's fourth listed content section ("'一胎化'生育政策
  产生的时代背景研究") against the 2009 essay's text, to confirm or deny they
  substantially overlap.
- A page-count or section-count breakdown of the book's actual four parts,
  to replace the two secondhand readers' impressionistic weighting with a
  real ratio.
- The book was also excerpted as a standalone volume, 《马寅初考》(*An
  Investigation of Ma Yinchu*, per the Douban review) — a shorter, possibly
  more findable text that would independently test the Ma-Yinchu-heavy
  reading without requiring the full 501pp. monograph.

## Candidate next moves

- Manual consultation: the physical book is not digitized and has 403'd or
  simply not surfaced on every fetch route tried this session
  (aisixiang.com, library OPACs, Douban, China Digital Times were the four
  reachable proxies). No further automated retry is expected to succeed;
  this is a library/physical-access item, not a tooling gap.
- Check for the standalone 《马寅初考》 excerpt volume separately — a smaller,
  more tractable target than the full book.
- A direct transcript of 张曙光 (Zhang Shuguang)'s Unirule Institute critical
  response to the book, if one exists, would be a stronger Tier 2-3 source
  than the Douban review's paraphrase of it.

  framing assumed. A follow-up capture located and directly read three texts
  — not secondhand paraphrase — bearing on the book's content: an essay
  sharing one "most-discussed" chapter's exact title (zero Song Jian
  mentions), a named SASS reviewer's quantified account of the standalone
  《马寅初考》 excerpt volume (over half its pages on Ma Yinchu, zero Song Jian
  mentions), and a 2007 draft of Liang's "era background" essay (the topic
  matching the book's separately-cataloged fourth chapter), whose section 5
  rejects Song Jian's causal claim at length as one of three rival-originator
  theories. Together these confirm "minor within the Ma Yinchu chapters" but
  contradict "minor across the whole book" — Song's material looks
  concentrated in the fourth chapter, not diminished. Left open because: the
  physical 501pp. book itself is still unread by any session; the second
  "most-discussed" chapter's matching essay ("康生、陈伯达批判马寅初考略") was not
  found; and identity between the 2007 draft, the 2009 essay, and the book's
  actual fourth chapter remains inferred, not confirmed. See
