that three sources independently drawing on Marta A. Balińska's *For the
Good of Humanity: Ludwik Rajchman, Medical Statesman* (CEU Press, 1998) —
the Institut Pasteur archival chronology, Josep Lluís Barona Vilar's 2021
essay, and CEU Press's own back-cover blurb — all use generic
"McCarthyism" / "McCarthy's followers" language rather than naming the
Senate Internal Security Subcommittee or [[entity-james-o-eastland|James
O. Eastland]], the body and chairman [[entity-ludwik-rajchman|Ludwik
Rajchman]]'s own FBI FOIA file identifies as the actual issuer of his 1957
subpoena (see
[[claim-fbi-file-confirms-siss-subpoenaed-rajchman-february-1957]]).

## Why it matters
The finding is currently a negative one — an absence across secondaries,
not a statement about the book itself — because no session has read
Balinska's own relevant chapter directly. Two distinct explanations are
live and only a direct read can distinguish them: (1) Balinska's own text
also uses the popular "McCarthyism" shorthand rather than naming SISS and
Eastland specifically, which would mean the flattening originates with the
family biography itself; or (2) her text does name the committee and
chairman, and three independent secondary writers each compressed it away.
These have different implications for how much weight to put on
Balinska's biography as a corrective to popular retellings versus a source
that itself needs the FBI file to sharpen it.

  paywalled (Cambridge Core, academic.oup.com respectively; both already
  known-blocked routes per `00-meta/specs/sources.md`) but would be Tier 2
  secondary assessments of the book's own claims if ever reachable, and
  might themselves quote the relevant passage.

  original identifies this as the chapter spanning the 1957 departure, so
  any future library/interlibrary-loan attempt can go straight to one
  chapter of a 293–321-page book instead of searching the whole text.
- Wellcome Collection (London) holds a physical copy of the 1998 English
  edition on open shelves (call number "BZP (Rajchman)") — a concrete

  session tried plus several new ones, across both the 1998 English
  translation and the 1995 French original, and still could not read the
  book's own text. New blocked routes this session: dokumen.pub (403 to

  listing (redirect loop `archive_page` would not follow), and the French
  original itself — no free full-text host located; Éditions La
  Découverte sells only a paid digital edition, no preview or
  search-inside function found. The De Gruyter/CEU Press ebook DOI page
  confirmed a literal zero-byte response body (not merely "no preview").
  The next-best route, named-author book reviews, was also tried and did
  not resolve the question: Ilana Löwy's *Medical History* (2000) review
  loaded its landing page this session but the review text itself sits
  behind a Cambridge Core "Save PDF" paywall; Jean-Claude Favez's
  *Vingtième Siècle* (1996) review and Bénédicte Vergez-Chaignon's
