German economist (1899–1966), a leading ordoliberal and one of the intellectual
architects of West Germany's post-war "social market economy," and a co-founder
of the Mont Pelerin Society. His 1937 textbook *Die Lehre von der Wirtschaft*
was translated into English in 1962 as *Economics of the Free Society*.

Matters to this vault as the third runner in a two-runner race: per

2005]], Röpke used the exact phrase "spontaneous order" in print in that 1937
textbook, more than a decade before
[[entity-michael-polanyi|Polanyi]]'s 1948 essay and well before
[[entity-friedrich-hayek|Hayek]]'s 1960 use — which, if confirmed, unseats the
"Polanyi was first, full stop" reading the vault's priority cluster is built on.

  *Economics of the Free Society* confirms the exact "spontaneous order" /
  "commanded order" phrase Bladel attributed to Röpke — upgrading that half
