Soviet and Russian mathematician (1937-2010) who, while still a student of
[[entity-andrey-kolmogorov|Andrey Kolmogorov]], resolved Hilbert's 13th
problem — showing that any continuous multivariate function can be written
as a finite composition of continuous single-variable functions — in work
formalized in a dissertation defended in 1959, with his degree conferred in
1961.

Matters to this vault as the mathematician behind the 1957
Kolmogorov-Arnold representation theorem, the 67-year-old pure-mathematics
result that a 2024 MIT/Caltech/Northeastern team cited directly as the
structural basis for Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs), a named alternative
to the standard multi-layer perceptron in deep learning
