Struan Jacobs

Scholar of the history of social and economic thought whose textual studies of Michael Polanyi and Friedrich Hayek — published in the Polanyi Society's journal Tradition and Discovery — argue on textual grounds that it was Polanyi, not Hayek, who first put the term "spontaneous order" into print, and that Hayek's own first use waited until The Constitution of Liberty (1960).

Matters to this vault as the Tier-2 backbone of its entire spontaneous-order priority cluster: nearly every claim the vault holds about who used the phrase first, and about how Polanyi's and Hayek's conceptions diverge, rests on Jacobs's 1997 paper "Michael Polanyi and Spontaneous Order, 1941–1951" (sha d7688f5d…). His revisionist priority claim is the one a peer-reviewed rebuttal (Röpke-centric, Bladel 2005) directly disputes.
