Chinese-American engineer (1911–2009), co-founder of Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a leading figure in early American rocketry, who was stripped of his security clearance and deported during the Red Scare in 1955 — after which he became the founding father of China's ballistic-missile and space program. In China, he went on to found the country's first cybernetics laboratory (1962) and, from the 1980s until his death, to serve as the state's most senior institutional advocate for qigong, traditional Chinese medicine, and "special human body functions" as legitimate scientific research.

Matters to this vault as the recruiter who trained [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]] — the central figure of the vault's longest-running cybernetics-dating dispute — into cybernetics domestically in 1962, more than a decade before the European contacts (1975 Twente, 1978 Helsinki) the dispute has focused on; and, independently, as a striking case of a rigorous Cold War engineer becoming the institutional shield for pseudoscience later in the same career.

- 2026-08-28: A 1997 English-language secondary source (Paul Dong, *China's Super Psychics*) surfaced a bibliography of 17 papers and 16 speeches attributed to Qian on EHF/qigong/human body science, 1980–1988; and a 2015 Chinese news outlet quoted a 1982 letter in which Qian personally guaranteed "with my Party spirit" that human body ESP is real — seven years before the 1989 book Wikipedia cites, suggesting the book consolidated a stance he'd already staked — privately, in internal correspondence to a Party propaganda official, the letter becoming public only with the 2015 article. Neither of Wikipedia's own two cited primaries (the 1989 book itself, the 2009 AJCM article) was obtained. - 2026-09-22 (propagation-repair): The 1982-letter sentence above was corrected in place. Was: the letter suggested the 1989 book consolidated "a stance he'd already staked publicly." Now: the stance was staked *privately*, in internal correspondence to Yu Wen, a deputy director of the Central Propaganda Department — the letter became public only with the 2015 article.
