British philosopher of science (1954-2007), author of *Inference to the Best Explanation* (1st ed. 1991, 2nd ed. 2004), the book that gave the modern name to abductive reasoning as inference to the most plausible explanatory hypothesis. Matters to this vault as the philosopher [[entity-timothy-mcgrew|Timothy McGrew]] cites (2013, p. 116) for construing the historiographical *argument from silence* as an instance of inference to the best explanation — the foundational figure behind the claim that the vault's own recurring negative-finding method ([[moc-argument-from-silence]]) is, on one reading, abductive reasoning by name.
