Benedictine monk who founded diplomatics — the discipline of authenticating
documents against dated exemplars — in 1681, to refute a Jesuit's charge
that the Church's own charters were forgeries. The vault's central figure
for a recurring question: how far, and by what route, did document-based
verification travel from monastic charter-authentication into general
historical method and, eventually, scientific-priority adjudication. As of
2026-07-31 the vault has a documented direct route (Mabillon → 17th-century
historiography of mathematics, via Wallis and Raphson) and an unconfirmed
one (Mabillon → 19th-century *Quellenkritik*/Ranke).

- 2026-08-14: a bridge-investigation capture found that Bill Gates's 2025 authentication of the surviving 1975 Altair BASIC scan (internal features a forger wouldn't bother to fake consistently) is structurally the same move Mabillon founded — a genuine, previously unlinked member of this cluster, reached via a false-friend check on an unrelated embedding proximity. - 2026-09-22: two more unrelated claims joined the cluster the same way — a Werbos/DARPA chronology claim and a NASA ozone-anomaly dating claim, paired by the retrieval index at cosine 0.84 despite sharing no entity, document, or domain. Both turned out to perform Mabillon's core move (dated-primary-source comparison overruling a received attribution), and a follow-up note found they're two different sub-species of it — anachronism-exclusion versus primary-supersedes-secondary correction.
