German polymath (1646–1716) who developed calculus independently of Isaac
Newton and originated much of its still-used notation, including the
integral sign.

Matters to this vault in two distinct threads it doesn't share a page
before now: as the figure whose "prestige" both

rival symbol — though the two sources weight his role differently, one
crediting him alone, the other crediting him and Newton jointly — and,
separately, as one half of the Newton–Leibniz pair

  memoir the "foundation of 'modern' deep learning" with no hedge marking
  that as a retrospective category rather than a dateable fact, the load-
  bearing example in a bridge-check on Schmidhuber's unflagged prolepsis.
