British researcher (1923–2007) who founded the Department of Machine Intelligence
and Perception at the University of Edinburgh and, after wartime codebreaking work
at Bletchley Park alongside Alan Turing, became a leading figure of early British
artificial intelligence. He matters to this vault as a contemporaneous insider
voice in the 1973 Lighthill controversy: his Part III comment in *Artificial
Intelligence: a paper symposium* — the same publication carrying
[[entity-john-mccarthy|McCarthy]]'s review — supplies the clearest primary reading
of what "control theory" denoted to a working AI researcher inside the very debate
McCarthy's dismissal comes from, and his Edinburgh program was, in effect, the
report's target.
