Director of the Institution Royale des Jeunes Aveugles (the Royal
Institution for Blind Youth, Paris) at the time Charles Barbier's raised-point
writing system was introduced there. In retirement, after both Braille and
Barbier had died, Pignier wrote a school history containing a biographical
sketch of Braille that — per historian Philippa Campsie's direct account,
working from the surviving correspondence — invents a fictional episode: the
young Braille, around the system's 1821 introduction, pointing out to
"Monsieur Barbier" some of the problems with his system and suggesting
improvements. Pignier writes it bare — no detail, no statement of whether
the two men met in person, no account of Barbier's response; the familiar
hostile face-to-face confrontation is later dramatization layered on that
invented kernel. The vault treats this as a distinct fabrication from the
"soldier-code" origin legend, riding in the same received popular story but
traceable to a different source and mechanism.
