Terni steelworkers' oral accounts relocated a 1949 killing to 1953 — the
year of mass layoffs — and argued the factual error was itself the
finding: the displaced date reveals what the event *meant* to those who
remembered it, not merely that memory failed. The vault keeps this
adjacent to, but explicitly separate from, its deep-lineage-myth-correction
cluster: Portelli's "error" is ordinary memory drift read as data about
meaning-making, not a competing dramatic origin story displacing a mundane

  Formalists, and Passerini instead. The essay also independently corroborates,
  in Portelli's own words, the substance (though not the exact 1949/1953
  figures) of the Trastulli date-displacement claim.
