A palimpsest is parchment that was scraped clean and overwritten to reuse a scarce
material, leaving an earlier text erased but not fully gone. The Sinai Palimpsests
Project (2011–2016), run by the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library, applied
multispectral imaging — photographing pages under many wavelengths of light to
separate the faint under-writing from the visible over-text — to the collection of
St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai. The project's director,
[[entity-michael-b-phelps|Michael B. Phelps]], gives the definitive figures in his
own 2023 peer-reviewed retrospective: spectral data were generated for "6,800
palimpsest pages, representing 74 palimpsest codices," yielding "identification of
307 discrete erased texts in 11 languages" — stated twice, in two separate
sections of the same chapter, with the same numbers both times. Several of the
recovered texts were in languages or versions not previously attested, including
Syriac and Christian Palestinian Aramaic material.

The 305 figure once carried here came from EMEL's own institutional project page
(still online, undated): "Based on these images, participating scholars identified
305 erased texts" — a figure since repeated in press and aggregator coverage. It
does not survive contact with Phelps's later, more authoritative academic account,
and no source located gives a reconciling footnote for the two-text gap. Two
adjacent figures from the same project disagree across its own venues in the same
direction — see
