1990s — was not a purely commercial venture. Contemporaneous trade reporting
stated the chip was "developed with grants of $1.2m from the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency, $400,000 from the US Office of Naval Research"
(Tech Monitor), and a 1993 *Dr. Dobb's Journal* account records that "Intel
and Nestor have delivered to DARPA samples of the Ni1000." That defense
money, not just check-reading and sonar contracts, helped carry the chip
through development is confirmed. The specific dollar figures are not:
Nestor's own FY1996 and FY1997 Form 10-K filings with the SEC describe two
separate contracts with different, more precise numbers — a DARPA
chip-development contract increased to approximately $1,630,000 in 1992

separate ONR-funded, ARPA-administered contract for the chip's PC-compatible
development board, totaling $776,167

convention, where a primary and a secondary retelling disagree the primary
