Liu Shejian (刘社建), a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai
Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Economics — [[entity-liang-zhongtang|Liang
Zhongtang]]'s own home institution — published a 2015 review of 《马寅初考》
(*An Investigation of Ma Yinchu*), the standalone volume a Douban review
says reproduces the two "most-discussed" chapters of Liang's 2014 book (see
[[claim-liang-2014-book-most-discussed-content-is-ma-yinchu-not-song-jian]]).
Liu writes that "more than half of *An Investigation of Ma Yinchu*'s pages
are devoted to demonstrating that Ma Yinchu's criticism at the time had no
connection to Kang Sheng and Chen Boda" — a specific, quantified figure from
a named critic, rather than an anonymous reader's impression. The figure
measures the space given to that one sub-thesis, not to Ma Yinchu material in
general — the book is titled 《马寅初考》, so the general reading would need no
number. The roughly 1,800-character review, which discusses Mao Zedong, Kang
Sheng, Chen Boda, and the historiography of the "one man wrongly criticized,
three hundred million wrongly added" myth in detail, never mentions
[[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]].

This corroborates, from an independent and higher-tier source, the same
absence recorded in
[[claim-liang-2011-ma-yinchu-essay-shares-book-chapter-title-omits-song-jian|the
matching-titled essay above]]: two separate direct engagements with the
excerpted Ma Yinchu material now agree Song Jian is essentially absent from
it. Liu's own stated motive for reviewing the book — opposition to both the
one-child and two-child policies outright — is on the record in the review
but was not treated as load-bearing for the quantitative claim it also
carries.
