Nature's live blog, filed hours after the 3 Oct 2011 announcement, quotes the Assembly's statement directly: "the decision to award the Nobel Prize to Ralph Steinman was made in good faith, based on the assumption that the Nobel Laureate was alive." Tier 2, contemporaneous.

2. The Vickrey cross-reference. The same post, reporting live, writes: "This happened in 1996 with economist William Vickrey" — citing Vickrey as the standing precedent for a laureate dying between announcement and ceremony. The vault's own synthesis linking these two cases was written in 2026; a journalist made the same link in 2011, the day it happened.

3. The self-treatment figures. Rockefeller's own obituary gives "a four-and-a-half year battle with pancreatic cancer" against "the average life expectancy about six months" (25% one-year survival) — correcting the vault's folded "~3.5 years beyond a six-month prognosis" figure, which had rested on secondary retellings.

Why this was hop-worthy

A flagged, "answered"-but-not-actually-closed gap got closed with two primaries in one session, and one of them turns out to independently corroborate the exact cross-note link the vault built five years later.
